UK UFO Cases

Before World War II, the world was a very different place. The terms UFO and Flying Saucer were yet to be defined. The case files on this website will start at the very dawn of the 20th Century and cover many other UFO cases across Britain up to the present day.

In the early years of the 20th century there were many sightings of "phantom airships" or scareships as they became known. A common factor in many descriptions of UFOs is how they appear to be just beyond the cutting edge of the technology of the day. Fast forward to the 1970s and the Phantom Helicopter sightings are another example of this. Which leaves open the possibility of advanced terrestrial technology being the cause of the sightings. Then again it could be ET mimicking our own vehicles as a means of cover for their operations!

In the Second World War pilots of both Allied and Axis forces witnessed strange balls of light and strange craft. Later dubbed as the Foo Fighters. With the dawn of the Flying Saucer age shortly after the war, and a very paranoid era during the early Cold War years, a cover up began.

Into the 1950s there were many sightings by military pilots and a strange encounter on Lord Mountbatten's estate. This was shortly followed by a strange alien meeting with Sir Peter Horsley (Prince Philip's equerry).

In the 1960s things began to change and there were less sightings reported by the military. The Warminster Thing saw a wave of strange paranormal happenings that continued on into the 1970s.

The 1970s themselves seemed to be a bookend to a different, simpler era. There is the Berwyn Mountains case where a UFO allegedly crashed or landed in North Wales and later in the decade the House of Lords Debate on UFOs. Perhaps the weirdest UFO encounter in Britain occurred in 1979 when Bob Taylor was attacked by a strange object in Dechmont Law, Scotland.

By the time the 1980s came around things were changing rapidly. 1980 is the year when policeman Alan Godfrey had a very surreal experience. Shortyly afterwards American servicemen based at Bentwaters RAF base witnessed UFO activity over at least two nights in nearby Rendlesham Forest. Arguably second only to Roswell in UFO lore.

The last decade of the 20th century saw the end of the Cold War but no end of UFO sightings. Unidentified flying objects were seen across Northern Europe. The Cosford Incident introduced Nick Pope to his new duties on the MoD UFO desk. Strange triangular objects were seen over Scotland and the Peak District. A very rare report of strange aliens seen in "bandit" country in Northern Ireland by SAS troops leaked out. The Home Secretary , Michael Howard's home was supposedly buzzed by a UFO and ,the then new Prime Minister, Tony Blair even received a private briefing on UFOs.
